Formed in 2002, XCN Technology Sdn Bhd (XCNT) designs, develops, constructs and markets, waste-to-energy and incineration systems for solid waste disposal. XCN has designed and built four incineration plants for the Malaysian government. Its Autogenous Combustion Technology (ACT) effectively incinerates Asian waste by enabling fuel and air to be efficiently mixed through a cyclonic air injection system.

The company built its pilot incineration plant in 2004 .
Their vision is to be a market leader in the incineration industry in Malaysia and envisage themselves as a regional player  within the next three to five years given their ability to treat the unique naturet of Asian waste.

Municipal solid waste is a serious problem in Malaysia, as it is projected that the country will generate as much as 30,000 tonnes of garbage by 2015. Despite this bleak projection, Malaysia is still dependent on landfills that take up a lot of space and point toward a future where space issues will become a problem of massive magnitude. However, that’s not the only drawback — landfills are neither sustainable nor environment-friendly. A more viable solution for the disposal of municipal solid waste is the use of incinerators, such as the ones developed by home-grown company XCN Technology.

 

Although XCNT may face stiff competition from large multinational corporations, the team is confident that their technology will help them succeed. XCNT certainly has an edge over others in the industry, as they are able to treat even very moist types of waste. Moist waste, which is typical of Asian countries, has proven to be a real challenge for the waste management industry in general. However, this isn’t a problem for the XCNT incinerator which easily and effectively disposes of all kinds of municipal solid waste including waste with high moisture content.

 

While XCNT’s technology certainly provides a more environment-friendly solution for the treatment of waste, that’s not the only benefit. The company’s incinerators also deliver lower operational costs and require far less land than landfills. The core technology, which centres on the rotary kiln incineration furnace, was developed from scratch and took 4 years to complete. Currently, XCNT has successfully constructed a total of 5 plants, with an installed capacity of 270 tonnes per day. There is no doubt that this is a mark of the company’s ability to provide top notch quality and high performance incinerators that are also cost effective.

 

Although there are innumerable expansion opportunities for the incineration business — mainly because green technology is being actively sought after around the world — there is a huge challenge to deal with as well. The team at XCNT has found that fostering awareness and encouraging more people to embrace innovation and change with relation to municpal waste management is not an easy task.

However, this hasn’t stopped the company from pursuing its ultimate vision. As they continue to work with the Malaysian government to develop large-scale waste-to-energy plants, XCNT aims to become a market leader in the Malaysian incineration industry with at least 50% of the market share. Within the next few years, the team at XCNT see themselves working together as regional players — something that is certainly not an impossible dream as the market is expected to grow to RM2 billion in the next 3 years.

 

While they have big plans on the horizon, XCNT is also aware of the challenges that lie immediately ahead. Two major obstacles are the public’s negative perception of incineration plants and the mindset that locally-developed technology is inferior to western, Japanese or Korean ones.

To disprove misconceptions, XCNT has taken a proactive approach by educating the public through media and plant tours that prove incineration technology has evolved and is able to meet stringent standards. The company also plans to diversify the application of their core technology, to treat other types of wastes, such as biomass, industrial, clinical and agricultural. In fact, they have already made major inroads into producing high-grade charcoal from coconut shells.

It appears that with these successes and a “never give up” outlook, XCNT is set to create important, positive changes in waste management that will have lasting effects for generations to come.
