Happiness Is A Choice

The dynamic duo behind Netizen Testing is Alvin Chai and Wee Li, who are high school buddies. Alvin’s fascinating work history includes a number of years spent working with Internet start-ups and website design. He is also no stranger to the legal arena and was once a practising criminal and corporate lawyer. Wee Li, on the other hand, is a trained engineer who worked for a multinational car manufacturer. With their combined expertise and diverse backgrounds, Netizen Testing was born out of the realisation that Asia needs a testing service for websites, apps and digital interfaces.

Though their company is still in its early stages, Alvin and Wee Li are confident that they can make it work, thanks to the digital revolution that is just beginning to take over Asia. Having predicted that ‘something big was about to happen on the Asian digital landscape,’ the duo decided they wanted to be a part of it. This led to them joining forces to start Netizen Testing in late 2011.

At present, Netizen’s service enables customers to watch how users behave on a specific website. The service allows clients to see where users are confused and why they leave the site or app. It is very common for clients to be too ‘into’ their product, which ‘blinds’ them from flaws that a clearly visible from a user’s point of view. Netizen Testing’s service provides a fresh pair of independent and impartial eyes that can provide priceless, unbiased feedback on a website or app’s design, navigation and user experience.

Alvin and Wee Li’s biggest challenge so far is to deliver results in the shortest time possible. This is a challenge because clients tend to judge not just by quality but by speed of delivery. Many clients are in the process of developing their website or app and require really quick feedback. In order to overcome this challenge, Alvin and Wee Li are working hard to recruit as many good testers as they possibly can.

The two friends and entrepreneurs say their most memorable moment so far happened when they managed to get their first paying client. They were thrilled to know that someone was willing to pay for their unique service — mainly because it is such a novel idea in this part of the world. That first client gave the duo the confidence to pursue more clients and inspired them to make their service even better. They also hope to provide testing results that are quicker and more practical in the long run.

Alvin and Wee Li plan to be the leading company in providing online usability testing to the whole of Asia and eventually hope to expand their services worldwide. They want to be part of the movement that makes the World Wide Web a better and easier place to work and play. It is their aim to be able to test any digital interface including such high-tech contraptions as smart cars and smart TVs.

When asked what his motto in life is, Alvin replies with a quote by Andrew Matthews, who said: “Happiness, more than anything, is a choice we make every day.” This motto has empowered him to take responsibility for his own wellbeing and over the years, Alvin says he has developed the ability to accept and deal with whatever comes his way. Wee Li’s favourite quote, on the other hand, is “The only constant in life is change”. He believes everyone is a ‘work in progress’ and we all need to keep adapting to changes in order to stay on top of things.

Both Alvin and Wee Li are big fans of Tony Hsieh, the founder and CEO of Zappos. They admire Hsieh’s approach to business, which is very much focused on customer service. Their advice to new entrepreneurs is specific: “Don’t quit your job at the early stages, just try to build your prototype as quick as possible. Test out whether there is a market and then create your business plan.”
